Here, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about home EV charging station installation. If you have additional questions not addressed here, please contact us and our team will be glad to help.

1. What is the Price Range for a Professional Home EV Charging Station Installation?

Most EV charging station installation jobs in the Northern VA area cost between $900 and $3,000. This range includes labor for a professional and licensed electrician, materials, and applying for and securing the permit with the local government.

However, this price range does not include drywall patch and paint should we need to cut the drywall to accommodate the cable. In addition, larger garages require more materials and longer distances to be covered, and so may add to the cost.

2. What Are the Factors That Can Impact the Installation Cost?

A few factors that can impact the cost of home EV charging stations are:

  • The distance between the electrical panel and the EV charging station
  • The cost of the electrical permit
  • Whether the electrician needs to cut drywall to install the cable

Our experienced electricians will give you a detailed estimate during your consultation so you know what to expect for the cost.

3. How Long Does a Home EV Charging Station Installation Take?

Wiring for EV stations and outlets that are within a few feet of the electrical panel may only take a few hours. These installations are generally the least expensive. However, the same EV station or outlet on the opposite side of the home from the electrical panel is typically more expensive and could be an all-day job.

As part of our service, we will walk you through your options and give you an estimated timeline for the installation.

4. Are There Price Differences When Installing Level 1 or Level 2 Home Charging Stations?

Yes, there is a price difference.

Level 1 charging stations use a 120V outlet and take longer to charge a vehicle. They provide a slower charge and can take up to 24 hours to fully charge your vehicle. Level 2 chargers use a 240V outlet and provide a faster charge, potentially half the time or less of a Level 1 charger, depending on your vehicle.

Level 2 chargers are a bit more expensive than Level 1 because of the faster charge they provide and the addition of a 240V outlet.

5. Can You Install Chargers Both Indoors and Outdoors–and Does the Price Vary?

Some chargers can be installed either indoors or outdoors. Almost all of them can be installed indoors. We recommend contacting your car’s manufacturer to see what they recommend as far as indoor or outdoor charging. The cost for outdoor chargers is generally higher, given the additional equipment needed, and often requires longer distances compared to indoor installations.

6. What Decisions Do I Need to Make When Installing an EV Charger at My Home?

You will need to decide:

  • The location of your charger (we can help you determine this)
  • How you would like to have the circuit installed (going through your home vs. outside in conduit)
  • What level of charge you would like (Level 1, 2, or 3)

All of these options will factor into the price of your charger. You can save money by providing the charger yourself. That way, all we need to do is run a circuit and work with your county to ensure your charger and electrical are up to code.
