Case Study: Installation of Home EV Charging on Pedestal for Stand-Alone Carport in Manassas

    Overview

The client for this project had a single family home in Manassas, Virginia with a standalone carport. He wanted a home EV charging station installed in this stand-alone building for his Mercedes SUV EV. As the siding of the carport was aluminum and could not support a wall-mounted charging outlet, we needed to install the charging hardware on a pedestal on the concrete foundation. Additionally, as the carport did not have electrical power, the design and layout of running underground cabling was included in the project.

    Project Details

At the beginning of the project, the client asked for our recommendations in terms of the optimal EV charging hardware to purchase and install, and our team recommended Chargepoint. When discussing Chargepoint, the client liked the functionality and the included app.

As the carport was a freestanding structure, it required that we run electrical wiring from the house underground to the structure. Our team undertook the trenching, cable running and securing the permits required for this installation. Furthermore, we tested the electrical system of the primary home to confirm that no electrical upgrade was required with this installation. The ChargePoint hardware was installed in the middle of the concrete floor on a pedestal to be able to charge either car in the two-car carport.

    Outcome

Upon completion of running the underground cabling and Chargepoint installation, the client then enclosed the carport with aluminum siding, and was very pleased with the system, charging speed and ease of use.
